(It’s me : P back when I was in Amsterdam and thought it would be hilarious to attempt to grow a terrible mustache). Fun fact: after 9 months of legal drinking, there will be an 8 hour period when I return to the US where I will be underage again.

Not sure if this was taken into account in your calculations, but under federal law, you change age the day before your birthday. Makes zero fucking sense, but does allow you to drink before 21st birthday.

Still contemplating whether I want to attempt to bring over a bottle of French champagne to celebrate my birthday with. Every time I’ve gone through customs it’s been maybe 30 seconds for them to look at my passport and look at me, and maybe 30 seconds to ask me one or two questions—no checks whatsoever. I had somebody else get it through the first time I came back from France, but neither of us were checked and it ended up being totally unnecessary.

Of course, it may be a moot point since I’ll be bringing back almost everything I needed to live for nine months, and may not even have the space.

For instance, if i was your age (20y,11m,31d) old, i could go into my state owned ABC distributor, purchase a nice bottle of whiskey, produce my state drivers license that states as such, have them scan it, and sure enough, i’d be able to walk out the door with said nice bottle of whiskey.

Haha that’s a new one actually, although very few people have actually seen me with this ridiculous attempt at a mustache. Last celeb comparisons I’ve gotten have been Christian Bale in American Psycho (yeah, no), Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates (also no, and again with the serial killers?), and back in the late 2000s when I had a very different haircut, comedian Demetri Martin (hilarious).

According to Wikipedia it looks like it might not be a problem due to the loophole that alcohol enforcement is up to the state and it is the federal that checks passports and imports. Therefore strictly speaking they can do anything, but they could do is hold you and call local or state police officer over who could ticket you.
